2024 marks my 11th year as Chair of Stockton RFC and the start of our 151st year as a club. This season has been one of challenges and opportunities, highs and lows. While we faced the disappointment of relegation, we celebrated remarkable successes, particularly in our junior and Women’s and Girls’ rugby sections. Stockton RFC continues to embody resilience, community, and determination to grow stronger together.
Reflecting on Relegation
Relegation is never easy, especially after the joy of promotion in 2022—the first in 30 years. Competing at a higher level brought its challenges, but it also provided valuable lessons.
While this season didn’t end as we’d hoped, it doesn’t diminish the effort, passion, and commitment shown by our players, coaches, and supporters. Stockton RFC has faced adversity before, and as always, we will rise again. Relegation is not an end; it is an opportunity to rebuild and return stronger.
On the Pitch
Colts Success
Our Colts delivered a stellar performance this season, winning the league and narrowly missing out on the County Cup, losing in the final. This incredible achievement highlights the strength of our junior section and the dedication of our players and coaches.
It’s been nearly 40 years since a junior side has accomplished what this group has achieved, and they should take immense pride in their success. Our Colts represent the future of Stockton RFC, and we are incredibly proud of them.
Women’s and Girls’ Rugby
Our Women’s and Girls’ section continues to be a source of inspiration. The senior women’s team built on their unbeaten league campaign in 2022, solidifying their place as leaders in regional rugby.
With thriving U12s, U14s, U16s, and U18s girls’ teams, supported by our rugby apprentice, Stockton RFC is setting the standard for Women’s and Girls’ rugby development. It’s a remarkable success story, and I look forward to seeing even more growth in the years to come.
Junior Rugby
Across all age groups, our junior section continues to excel. Fielding teams at every level is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers and Junior Chair Terry Wilson, whose boundless energy drives the programme forward. The future of Stockton RFC is bright, thanks to their efforts.
A Tribute to Nick Moore
Nick’s contribution to Stockton RFC over the years has been immense. He has not only managed the club’s finances through challenging times but has also physically built much of what we use today, from the floodlights to the perimeter fencing. Nick’s passion, dedication, and work ethic have left an indelible mark on our club.
On behalf of everyone at Stockton RFC, I want to place on record my deepest thanks to Nick. His support during difficult times has been invaluable, and his legacy will be felt for many years to come. I will truly miss him and all that he brought to the role.
Looking forward, I’m excited to welcome our new Treasurer, Mark Doherty. Mark brings fresh energy and ideas, and I’m confident he will continue to build on the strong foundations Nick has laid.
Facilities and Finances
While this season has tested us on the field, off the field Stockton RFC remains in excellent shape. Thanks to careful financial management, sponsorships, and member support, we continue to invest in our facilities.
From the floodlights and fencing to our refurbished changing rooms and hospitality area, Stockton RFC remains committed to maintaining a professional environment for players and members alike. Membership fees remain vital, ensuring we can deliver high-quality coaching, physiotherapy, and facilities for everyone.
Looking Ahead
Relegation presents a chance to rethink and rebuild. Stockton RFC has always been a forward-thinking club, and now is the time to explore innovative approaches to rugby. Whether it’s reimagining matchdays or restructuring how we deliver the game, we must adapt to ensure our club remains strong and relevant.
We must also focus on growing our volunteer base. The club has never been bigger, but the number of active volunteers has not kept pace. Sustaining our progress and meeting the challenges ahead will require more people stepping forward to share the workload.
Celebrating 151 Years
As we celebrate our 151st year, it’s a time to reflect on the incredible legacy of Stockton RFC. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and it’s important to honor their contributions.
We also take a moment to remember those we’ve lost. Their love for Stockton RFC and the foundations they built will never be forgotten. Their spirit lives on in every game we play and every achievement we celebrate.
Serving as Chair of Stockton RFC for the past 11 years has been my greatest honour. This season brought its challenges, but it also highlighted the strength of our club and its community. Together, we will rise again, ensuring Stockton RFC thrives for generations to come.
Yours in rugby,
Graham
