Whether you’re Maro Itoje or Ellie Kildunne, every journey begins in the same place — at your local grassroots rugby club, playing tag rugby with your mates.
For 152 years, Stockton Rugby Club has ridden the highs and lows of the game. Seasons come and go, but each September brings new faces, fresh energy, and renewed hope.
Introducing our Class of 2025. One day, one of them might wear a Red Rose or even become a British & Irish Lion… it’s happened before.
Incessant rain was the menu for the day at Grangefield where we welcomed Kirkby Lonsdale from South Cumbria for the first occasion. The weather impacted on the spectacle as a whole as handling errors owing to cold fingers and slippy rugby balls meant several try scoring opportunities went begging
Stockton got off to a great start within a few moments when centre Freddie Roxby carved his way through a Kirkby Lonsdale defence that appeared still to be on the bus coming over the A66 . Full back Ollie Shaw added the conversion and Stockton were leading 7-0 .
Foer the rest of the half Kirkby Lonsdale fought their way back into the game by regularly kicking for position .Good Red defence was needed after Stockton received a yellow card for a breakdown offence.. Cold hands lead to missed chances for both sides and at half time the score was still 7-0
Now with the rain at their backs and not in their faces Stockton enhanced their lead when winger Jay Cook scorched through the midifeld and outpaced the cover to touchdown near the posts. 14-0 with Ollie’s conversion
Stockton’s third try came when centre Elliot Shaw (playing his first game after the Newcastle Thunder season finished ) displayed a fine turn of pace to touchdown in the left corner but on this occasion Ollie’s attempt for the extras drifted wide so the lead was now 19-0
Then Ollie himself raced in down the left too and converted his own try to make it 26-0 .
But Kirkby Lonsdale certainly hadn’t given up and forced a score after several forward drives to close the gap to 26-7
Stockton left winger Kieren McNeil who had looked dangerous all game eventually managed to break free from the KL defence and crossed the whitewash near the posts for Ollie Shaw to add the conversion - 33-7
Again KL came back and managed to squeeze in the left hand corner via their threequarters to make it 33-12 with the last play of the game when Referee Revis Phiillps blew the final whistle at the end of a very wet and cold afternoon
So Stockton are through to the next round of the National Cup which will be played on 25 October so please try and keep this day free. But we will be without Henry Rowlands who is off to Loughborough University after an impressive move up from Colts rugby
Meanwhile our Saracens picked up a fixture at Richmondshire after a blank League week
A good team performance the highlight of which was Jack Brown Johnson’s hat trick – as a prop!
Not to be outdone fellow Prop Jamie Douthwaite scored his first senior tty too
Scrumhalf Connor Perry added a brace and two Colts back row players Josh Martin and Eddie Cook Smith also touched down
Five conversions for new fly half Will Ashwell who kicked well led too a score of about 55-10 against what eventually turned out to be Richmond’s only team
Many thanks to Alex Cook Smith who also played half an hour for Richmond after they lost players through injury
Next week we have a home game v Sunderland 3 rd ... See MoreSee Less
We end another chapter as Meg finished her role with the club yesterday.
Our sixth Development & Schools Lead — and our very first female in the role — Meg has made a lasting impact, especially in championing the growth of the women’s and girls’ game. From school sessions to Sunday sidelines, her energy, empathy and passion have inspired players and parents alike.
On a personal note, I’ll miss her incredibly — but part of caring about someone is encouraging them to grow, even if that means saying goodbye.
Meg, thank you. Keep being you. Keep growing the game.
